Indian Cinema is progressing, says Amitabh
With many of our films going international and are being picked by coveted film festivals to be screened, the Hindi film industry has certainly come a long way in terms of popularity and quality. However whenever the Indian film industry is tagged as Bollywood, one can be assured that India’s millennium star Amitabh cringes at the very sound of it. He recently exclaimed that he hates the tag, “I don’t like this word (Bollywood) which describes the Indian film industry,” said Amitabh who further added that people today take pride in being associated with Indian films.
“Films have now almost become a part of our culture. There are more people who know about the Indian film industry. So, that bodes well. The West was very cynical about our quality of cinema. We made very escapist fare. But one of the points the West did not recognize was that cinema as a medium of entertainment for the common man,” said Amitabh. He added that he is elated for the fact that the world is finally waking up to the Indian talent, “I do see Indian cinema progressing very well; gradually, our talent is being recognized, whether in Great Britain or Hollywood, in festivals in Cannes, London, Venice. So, I think we are on the right path,” added Amitabh.
